Loneliness is a significant social issue and has the potential to impact the LGBTQIA+ community at a greater rate due to societal pressures and prejudices. Higher rates of neurodivergence within the LGBTQIA+ community can also add to the challenges of forming meaningful connections. Critically, the lack of a centralised platform with comprehensive information, resources and a way for social connection, compounds the difficulty of finding the right information when and as it is needed.
To address these issues, the creation of the Pulse site sought to integrate information, resources, support, and opportunities for social connections within the vibrant Perth LGBTQIA+ community. By offering approachable ways to connect with others, access reliable information, and find a sense of belonging, Pulse aims to enhance the overall well-being of individuals, regardless of their existing social networks.
Sonder Design was engaged to conduct concept development, brand development, target audience research, the creation of a high-fidelity prototype, and comprehensive marketing campaign.

Design Outcome:
The development of the Pulse site prioritised mobile optimisation and user experience. The final outcome merges multiple existing touch points into one integrated design, while supporting a place for community and connection. It delivers a response to the question “What would it look like if there were an online space that provided everything, including an avenue to soft-launch into a group or new activity?”, while addressing critical issues such as loneliness and well-being.
Additionally, with the assistance of funding by the Mental Health Commission of Western Australia and through a comprehensive grassroots campaign, the Pulse project tackles the propensity for information to be missed by promoting at key events and locations throughout Perth.
Overall, Pulse offers a unique way to connect with others via an engaging online space, while providing a cohesive experience when sourcing information, support, resources, and staying on top of the dynamic Perth LGBTQIA+ social scene.
